Composition
"Love So Soft" is a soul-trap R&B anthem written and produced by Mozella, Priscilla Renea, and Jesse Shatkin. It features session appearances by the American soul band Earth, Wind & Fire led by Verdine White and Gary Bias. Critics noted the song's soulful sound and its departure from the usual mainstream pop sound of Clarkson's previous releases. NPR's Karen Gwee noted that the song makes a familiar emphasis on percussion over melody but was surprised that its chorus was chanted rather than belted -- a surprising move for Clarkson. Hugh McIntyre of Forbes described the trap verses as "odd" on its own, but is complimentary harmonized "when the horns kick in and bring the soul the song needed". Idolator's Mike Wass compared the song as from the '90s, but is also quintessentially 2017, describing it as falling closer to the Back to Basics-era Christina Aguilera in its blend of old and new.

Release and reception
"Love So Soft" was released by Atlantic Records as the lead single from Meaning of Life alongside "Move You" on September 7, 2017. Both songs marked as Clarkson's first single release from the label. The track was sent to American radio stations from September 11-12, 2017.
In her review of the track for NPR, Gwee praised Clarkson's vocals as it pulls the song from ubiquitous-anonymous, grocery aisle territory, and noted that there are only few others who have her easy confidence and her vocal ability. Reviewing for Forbes, Hugh McIntyre despite the song failing to have the immediate punch that previous album-introducers like "Since U Been Gone" or "My Life Would Suck Without You" managed, that it appears to be the point -- that "This is an older, wiser, more experienced Kelly Clarkson, one who has now been in the business for 15 years, refused to accept the idea of what a pop star needs to look like, gotten married and become a mom, all while seemingly letting criticism slip away like water off a duck's back."
Awards and nominations
"Love So Soft" was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
Music video
The accompanying music video for "Love So Soft" was released the same day as the track. It was directed by Dave Meyers, whom Clarkson had previously collaborated with on "Breakaway" (2004). The video features Clarkson and her background vocalists performing the track in various scenes -- including Clarkson wearing a flowing yellow gown that transmutes into butterflies, a series of Clarkson clones with their eyes obscured by hat brims as a nod to Beyoncé's "Formation" video, and a bold zoom into Clarkson in the living room of an avant-garde, cliff-side abode. Critics praised the video as a successful showpiece to the song, with some noting its '90s influence and its "psychedelic" visual effects.
